Intrarenal Distribution of Nutrient Blood Flow Determined with Krypton 85 in the Unanesthetized Dog.

چکیده
• The development of the couutercnrrent hypothesis as an explanation for the osmotic gradient from cortex to papilla of the kidney has again stimulated investigation of the intrarenal distribution of blood flow. Theoretical considerations have emphasized the necessity of a relatively low medullary blood flow for the maintenance of this gradient. However, present methods of measuring renal blood flow in the intact animal do not estimate the distx-ibution of flow to the medulla. Trueta and co-workers demonstrated by renal angiography that medullary flow was slower than that of the cortex; these observations have been confirmed by Kramer et al.,'' who found that the medullary transit time of Evans blue dye was much longer than that of the cortex. In the present investigation, a method has been developed for determining distribution of renal blood flow in the unanesthetized dog by monitoring the disappearance of Kr from the kidney after injection of the isotope into the chronically catheterized renal artery; no blood samples are needed for the measurement. .Kr**, an inexpensive and readily available isotope, was used by Brun and coworkers" to measure renal blood flow by the modified ICety technique; they were, at that time, unaware of the gamma emissions from Kr'\ Although Kr is primarily a beta emitter, 0.6% of its disintegrations are gamma

متن کاملThe effect of halothane on renal cortical blood flow in normotensive and hypotensive dogs.
The effect of halothane on renal cortical blood flow (RCBF) has been investigated using the krypton 85 clearance technique, in seven dogs at normal arterial pressure, and in eight dogs at pressures of 100 mm Hg produced by bleeding. Halothane 0.5 per cent caused small and variable changes in RCBF in the normotensive animals. In the hypotensive animals, halothane 0.5 per cent caused a marked ris...

• Isotopic clearance techniques using radioactive inert gases have permitted assessment of the capillary blood flow in a number of organs. In certain organs, such as heart and testis, the clearance curve is a monotonic exponential function suggesting uniform distribution of the capillary blood flow. However, in other organs such as the kidney, the clearance curve can be analyzed into a number o...
متن کاملMeasurement of intrarenal anatomic distribution of krypton-85 in endotoxic shock in dogs.
Renal blood flow distribution was measured in control dogs and dogs in endotoxic shock by utilizing a modification of 85Kr washout. Kidneys, injected with 85Kr via a renal arterial cannula, were removed at several specific intervals after injection, rapidly frozen, and sectioned transversely so that pieces of tissue could be isolated and counted for radioactivity. Control outer cortical blood f...
